Enamel erosion and cavities are two dental issues that go hand in hand. If you’re not careful, they can harm your smile and alter your oral health. This is why it’s important to prevent these issues as much as possible. To help you do so, our dentist, Dr. Marilyn Amaral, has some tips and instructions for you.

First, stay away from tooth-harming foods and drinks, like acidic and sugary products. These products include things like orange juice, lemons, limes, tomatoes, sweets, soda, and more. If you avoid these things, there is a good chance you’ll avoid enamel erosion and cavities in the first place. If you do happen to have an acidic product, please wait 30 minutes to brush your teeth. If you brush your teeth too soon, your toothbrush can help progress the erosion.

Second, keep your smile in tip-top shape by keeping up on oral hygiene and exposing your chompers to fluoride. You can do this by brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, flossing once a day, rinsing daily with fluoride mouthwash, and visiting your dentist every six months, which can include a professional fluoride treatment. It’s also important to drink plenty of tap water. Tap water has fluoride in it. Fluoride is a natural mineral that can strengthen your teeth and prevent enamel erosion.
